Joaquin Moraga Students Connecting and Protecting- Conservation Collaboration with Save Mount Diablo

Joaquin Moraga Earth and ECO Club students have had the privilege of participating in a Conservation Collaboration Agreement with Save Mount Diablo for the past three years. Each year, students gained insight into the history of the conservation movement, and their vital role in helping keep local open spaces for the future. They learned about the flora and fauna while hiking with an expert naturalist and outdoor education enthusiast. Students participated in restorative work planting native grasses and removing invasive species. They enjoyed quiet, contemplative time, allowing them to reconnect to nature.

2016-17 EARTH Field Trips to Mount Wanda

2016-2017 Earth classes were able to spend part of the day hiking on Mount Wanda in Martinez and learning about its flora, fauna, geology, as well as our relationship to nature in this busy San Francisco Bay Area.  After lunch we took a tour of John Muir's home and learned about the man who helped create the National Park System.

I am grateful that both the November and June field trips were sponsored by a STEM grant from the CCCOE, Canogle, and Tesoro!

Earth Stewardship

2018-19 marks the seventh year that JM has had EARTH (Earth Stewardship) as part of its 6th grade elective wheel. We are thankful that each year the JM garden continues to flourish with the numerous donations and community service hours various individuals and groups provide. The curriculum links outdoor learning and practical skills to much of what students are learning in their core subjects. The goal of the class is to provide students ways to investigate and learn about the environment around them such that they become proactive in protecting and enhancing it.
